Medication administration - principles and practice revisited
This two-day workshop is designed to update the registered nurses’ skills in medication administration. Topics covered include administration via all five routes, drug calculations and managing IV pumps, syringe drivers and PCA systems.
Program includes:
Day 1

medication administration - review of professional and legal responsibilities

introduction to pharmacokinetics

introduction to pharmacodynamics

Oh no! Not another medication error! Causes of medication errors, strategies to reduce medication errors and drug nutrient interactions

principles of drug calculations, examples and worksheets

preparing and administering oral medications – practical session

questions and answer
Day 2
-
review previous study day’s work.

ions, carriers, blockers - what are they?

medication administration - overview of subcutaneous and intramuscular injection techniques

administering medications intravenously - managing IV infusion, IV bolus injections

discussion and demonstration of IV pumps, syringe drivers, PCA systems, Alaris Medical Systems

nurses and pain relief - principles and management of patient controlled analgesia systems; epidural analgesia
