Understanding dementia

4h CPD

This module was designed in collaboration with Dementia Australia for nurses, midwives, and carers wishing to improve their knowledge of the effects of dementia, diagnosis and treatment, as well as communication strategies to assist in caring for people with dementia. The prevalence of dementia is increasing and changes in practice are required to provide better care for people living with dementia.
This module has been updated in 2020 with new content and resources.

The key learning objectives are to help you:

  1. Understand the prevalence of dementia, identify the common causes of dementia, signs and symptoms and the importance of an early diagnosis
  2. Assess cognitive decline to mitigate risk, distinguish between dementia, depression and delirium and gain an understanding of the main drug treatments for dementia
  3. Explore effective communication skills with a person living with dementia
