Older people have families too: how to care for them

Registered NurseEnrolled Nurse

Dealing with a patient’s family or carers in challenging situations is a regular occurrence for nurses. There are many questions that arise:

  • ‘What do we do when the families won’t allow us to… (give pain medication, refer to palliative care, or withdraw treatment)?’
  • ‘How do we resolve family uncertainties about…  (sending their relative to hospital, end-of-life care planning, medications)?’
  • ‘How do you tell a family member about an unexpected death, particularly over the phone at night?’
  • ‘How do you run a family meeting, particularly when there’s family conflict?’
  • ‘How should we involve families in care planning?’
  • ‘How do you conduct a family assessment, e.g., to establish various roles and relationships?’
  • ‘What do you do when there is NO family?’

Nurses caring for older Australians need skills, education and encouragement to facilitate family support. This seminar offers a structured session covering many of the skills required to communicate effectively with families and carers while advocating for their patients.

This course is suitable for registered nurses and enrolled nurses.
